You Never Know On The Internet

"On the Internet, nobody knows you're a dog."
New Yorker cartoon by Peter Steiner.

John Seroff and I have been reading each other's blogs and e-mailing about music and movies since I first discovered his site last year. Recently, he guest blogged here on a film meme, and I doodled him a logo.

So, imagine my surprise when he mentioned me (scroll way down), bestowing upon me the female pronoun. "Hate to break your heart, babe," I felt impelled to drop everything and write, "but I'm a BOY!". I soon received his sheepish reply. "Whoops," he said, "Coulda sworn you had titties". Goes to show.

For a reasonable bribe, I might be willing to unearth some photos of Girish from my hard drive. You know, if anyone is in need of proof, that is. If I'm not mistaken, I have a picture of Girish taking a picture of me. (Does Girish, I wonder, have a picture of me taking a picture of him?)

By the way, Girish, last night I was bored so I started clicking through the long (and growing) list of links on your site. TWO HOURS LATER, I was still chasing links all over the place, and stumbling into all sorts of sites that will soon become daily reads. great stuff.

Darren, I have a picture of you leaning contemplatively against a phone booth at the Ossington subway station. Quite cinematic, I might add.

Oh, and this is funny. By an odd coincidence, I got a note yesterday from Terry Teachout who said that the first time he saw my blog he was under the impression it was titled...."girlish".

Which, by the way, is what the Microsoft Word spell-checker offers as the "correct" substitute when it encounters my name.

Okay, so this is a fun tangent. Spellcheckers substitute "darken" for my name. I know that because my mother-in-law once auto-spellchecked an email before sending it to us, and I have been "Darken Hughes" ever since. Actually, thanks to my niece, my name has evolved into Darken-Dierken-Dorken, said in one quick breath.

Darren, your niece sounds like she likes to conjugate German verbs! And aren't you glad we're not in middle/high school? This is the scary stuff that nicknames are born of!

I have also made that same error, in this case with filmbrain. For those who visit my site, yes, that is my real name and real photo.

I think it was the Pebbles Flintstone topknot on your baby picture that threw him off. ;)

You're a boy?

I am SO out of here.

(Oh, and Peter, you're not alone. Just this weekend I was introduced to somebody as Filmbrain and I was told "wow, I always thought you were a woman!" Sigh.)

Pebbles. Of course!
There's a funny story on the genesis of the topknot. I'll have to grill my parents and get the details right before I lay it on y'all.
